Chapters are timecoded sections of your video, each with a title and description, that help viewers jump to the part they want. Tella generates them from your transcript with AI, and you open them from Chapters in the editor’s Setup panel or the video title menu.

Click Chapters in the Setup panel. You can also open the video title menu in the top-left corner and select Chapters, or choose Chapters from the More (⋯) menu in the top-right corner of the editor.
-
Click Generate (with the sparkle icon).
-
Tella analyzes your transcript and streams chapters in as they’re generated.
-
Review the chapters.
-
Click Done to save, or Cancel to discard.
Update chapters after trimming
When you trim your video after generating chapters, Tella detects that your chapters may be out of sync. An amber dot appears beside Chapters in the video title menu, and an Update button appears next to Chapters in Setup. Open the Chapters panel to see the banner Your edits may have changed your chapters. with a Regenerate button.
Click Regenerate in that banner to regenerate chapters based on your current video content. The new chapters will reflect your trimmed timeline.
Regenerate chapters
If you’re not happy with the generated chapters, you can regenerate them at any time:
-
Open the video title menu and select Chapters.
-
Click the sparkles button (Regenerate chapters), or open the More (⋯) menu and select Regenerate.
-
New chapters replace the existing ones.
-
Review them and click Done to save.
Edit chapters manually
After generating chapters, you can fine-tune them:
-
Edit a title or description: Click the Edit button (pencil icon) to enter edit mode, then click on any chapter to edit its text. Press Enter or click Done to save your changes.
-
Delete a chapter: Remove individual chapters you don’t need.
-
Delete all chapters: Open the More (⋯) menu and select Delete all chapters to remove all chapters at once.
If your first chapter starts after 0:00, Tella adds an Intro chapter at 0:00 when you save.
Copy chapters or turn one into a video
Chapters unlock several useful actions:
-
Turn a chapter into its own video: Hover a chapter, open its ⋯ menu, and select Copy to new video.
-
Copy as text: Open the More (⋯) menu and select Copy as text to copy chapters with timestamps and dashes (e.g.,
00:00 - Intro).
-
Copy with descriptions: Open the More (⋯) menu and select Copy with descriptions to copy chapters with timestamps, titles, and descriptions. Each chapter’s description appears on a new line below the title, with a blank line between chapters.
-

00:00 Intro), ready to paste into a YouTube description. See YouTube chapters.
Turn automatic chapters on or off
You can set Tella to automatically generate chapters for every new recording:
-
Go to Settings > Preferences.
-
Enable Auto-generate chapters (this is enabled by default).
-
Chapters will be generated automatically after each recording is transcribed.
The Preferences page also includes Auto-generate titles and Auto-generate descriptions toggles. These control whether Tella automatically generates a title and description for each new recording using AI. Both are enabled by default.
How do viewers see chapters?
When you add chapters to your video:
-
Viewers see chapter markers on the video progress bar
-
A chapter list may appear that viewers can click to jump to sections
-
On devices that support hovering, hovering over a chapter in the list shows a thumbnail preview. On touch devices, tap a chapter to jump straight to that section.
On mobile, landscape videos stay pinned at the top of the view page while you scroll through chapters, the transcript, or comments. Portrait videos scroll with the page. Last modified on September 30, 2026
