Remove silences automatically in the editor’s Cut panel: under Silences, choose Natural, Fast, or Faster, then click Remove N silences (for example, Remove 12 silences). Tella only treats a pause as silence when every unmuted audio track is quiet, and you can undo it with Reset silences or Reset all cuts.

Open the silence removal tool

  1. Open your video in the Tella editor.
  2. Click Cut to open the Cut panel.
  3. In the Cut panel, locate the Silences tool.

What’s the difference between Natural, Fast, and Faster?

Tella offers different modes to control how aggressively silences are removed:
  • Natural: Removes larger silences, preserving a more conversational flow.
  • Fast: Removes smaller silences for a more concise video.
  • Faster: Removes very short silences, creating the most condensed version of your video.

See how much time a mode saves

  1. In the Silences section, choose your preferred mode (Natural, Fast, or Faster).
  2. Tella will analyze your video based on the selected mode and display:
    1. The number of silences detected.
    2. The total time that will be saved by removing these silences.

How silence detection works with multiple audio sources

If your recording includes more than one audio source (for example, your microphone and your screen recording’s audio), Tella analyzes all audio tracks when detecting silences. A region is only marked as silence when every audible audio source is quiet at the same time. This means that if you are silent but your screen share is playing audio (such as a demo, a video, or music), that section will not be flagged as a silence. You do not need to do anything extra to enable this. Tella handles it automatically. Tella treats inaudible digital noise as silence, so a screen audio track that sounds silent will not prevent pauses in your microphone audio from being detected.

Speech-aware detection on voice tracks

For voice audio tracks (like your microphone), Tella combines waveform loudness with speech detection to decide what counts as silence:
  • Noisy microphones: Constant low-level background noise (fans, HVAC, or mic hiss) does not prevent pauses outside detected speech from being marked as silence.
  • Quiet speech: Speech detection protects low-volume speech, including soft consonants, from being cut even when the waveform is quiet.
A pause that speech detection groups with the words around it will not be marked as silence, even in Faster mode. You can trim that pause manually in the Cut panel. Loud non-speech content like music, applause, or sound effects is kept as audio.

Muted layers are excluded

If you’ve muted a layer by setting its volume to zero, that layer is automatically excluded from silence detection. This is useful when your recording includes a screen capture with system audio that you don’t plan to keep. Muting that layer ensures silence detection focuses only on the tracks you care about, like your voice. For example, if you recorded your screen with system audio alongside a microphone track, and you mute the screen layer, Tella will detect silences based on your microphone audio alone rather than requiring both tracks to be silent. The timeline also displays waveforms for all audio sources in your recording. Your microphone audio appears in the primary color, while other audio sources (like screen recording audio) appear in a muted gray. This gives you a clear visual overview of where audio activity is happening across all layers.

Remove the detected silences

  1. After selecting a mode, click Remove N silences (for example, Remove 12 silences).
  2. Tella will automatically remove the detected silences from your video.
  3. The timeline will update to reflect the changes, showing where silences were removed.
After removing silences with Natural or Fast, the mode selector stays available. After Faster, the most aggressive mode, it is hidden. You can choose a stricter mode to analyze the remaining pauses and remove any additional silences without resetting your edits.

Adjust a silence cut by hand

If you wish to adjust the automatic edits:
  1. Navigate to the specific area on the timeline where a silence was removed.
  2. Click and drag the handles of the split created by Tella to adjust where the silence removal begins and ends.
  3. Play back the video to ensure the edit meets your expectations.

Undo silence removal

If you’re not satisfied with the results, click Reset silences (the circular arrow next to Silences in the Cut panel), or open More actions in the Cut toolbar and click Reset all cuts. Both restore every cut in the current clip, not only the silences, so any manual cuts you made in that clip are undone too. You can then select a different mode or manually edit the silences.

Tips and additional info

  • Experiment with modes: Try different modes to see which one best suits your video. The Natural mode maintains a conversational pace, while Fast and Faster make your video more concise.
  • Manual adjustments: Even after using the Silence Removal tool, you can manually adjust or further trim your video using the trim handles.
  • Preview before finalizing: Always preview your video after applying silence removal to ensure the flow and timing meet your expectations.
  • Combine with other tools: You can use the Silence Removal tool alongside other trimming tools in Tella to polish your video further.
