What are chapters?

Chapters are timecoded sections of your video with titles and descriptions. They help viewers navigate longer videos by jumping to specific sections. Tella can automatically generate chapters from your video’s transcript using AI.

How to generate chapters

  1. Open your video in the Tella editor.
  2. Click on the Chapters tab in the right sidebar.
  3. Click the Generate button (with the sparkle icon).
  4. Tella will analyze your transcript and stream chapters as they’re generated.
  5. Once generation is complete, review the chapters in the editor.
  6. Click Done to save, or Cancel to discard.

How to re-generate chapters

If you’re not happy with the generated chapters, you can re-generate them at any time:
  1. Open the Chapters tab.
  2. Click Generate again.
  3. New chapters will replace the existing ones.
  4. Review and click Done to save.

Editing chapters manually

After generating chapters, you can fine-tune them:
  • Edit a title or description: Double-click on any chapter to edit its text.
  • Delete a chapter: Remove individual chapters you don’t need.

Using chapters

Chapters unlock several useful actions:
  • Create a clip from a chapter: Turn any chapter into a standalone video clip.
  • Keep only a chapter: Remove everything except the selected chapter’s content.
  • Copy for YouTube: Copy your chapters formatted with timestamps, ready to paste into a YouTube description.

Auto-generate chapters for new recordings

You can set Tella to automatically generate chapters for every new recording:
  1. Go to Settings > Preferences.
  2. Enable Auto-generate chapters. (this is enabled by default)
  3. Chapters will be generated automatically after each recording is transcribed.

How viewers see chapters

When you add chapters to your video:
  • Viewers see chapter markers on the video progress bar
  • A chapter list may appear that viewers can click to jump to sections
  • This makes it easy to navigate longer video
