Clip transitions control how each clip in your video starts after the one before it: Hard cut switches instantly, and Smooth glides your camera and screen from where they were in the previous clip into the new clip’s layout. Set it for the whole video in the editor under Layout → Layout settings → Clip transitions. Clip transitions under Layout settings in the Tella editor, with Smooth and Hard cut options

Change the clip transition

  1. Open your video in the Tella editor and click Layout in the sidebar.
  2. Click Layout settings (the sliders icon in the panel header).
  3. Under Clip transitions, choose Smooth or Hard cut.
The change applies to every clip boundary that follows the video setting, shows in the editor preview straight away, and is used when you export. You can undo it like any other edit. The same setting also appears in Setup → Clip transitions. Both controls change the same setting.

What is the difference between Smooth and Hard cut?

  • Hard cut jumps straight to the next clip. This is the default, so existing videos look the same until you change it.
  • Smooth starts the next clip’s camera and screen in the same position and size they had at the end of the previous clip, then animates them into the new clip’s layout. For example, if one clip ends with your camera full screen and the next starts with a screen-and-camera layout, the camera shrinks into its new spot instead of jumping.
Smooth only moves layers that appear in both clips. A layer that is new in the next clip, such as a screen recording after a camera-only clip, appears with a hard cut. The first clip in a video has nothing to transition from.

How is this different from layout transitions?

Clip transitions apply where one clip ends and the next begins. Layout changes inside a single clip animate on their own, and their pace is set separately under Layout → Layout settings → Animation. See Change layout and zoom animation styles.

Set a transition for one clip

You can override the video setting for an individual clip in the editor.
  1. Select the clip in the timeline, or move the playhead into it.
  2. Click Layout in the sidebar, then Layout settings (the sliders icon in the panel header).
  3. Under Clip transitions → From previous clip, choose Smooth or Hard cut, or choose Default to follow the video setting.
The setting controls how the selected clip starts after the one before it, so to change the transition between clip 2 and clip 3, select clip 3. From previous clip is not shown for the first clip, which has no previous clip to transition from. You can also use the Tella MCP server: update_clip accepts transition (smooth, hard_cut, or default to follow the video setting).
