What are multiple layouts?
Every clip has a base layout. Multiple layouts let you add layout cards on top of that base for specific moments, so one continuous recording can move between your camera, screen, side-by-side views, and Media.
They work well when you want to:
- Start on camera, then bring in your screen for a demo.
- Hide your camera while viewers need to focus on a detail.
- Cut to an image or video without recording a separate clip.
- Punch in on your camera for emphasis.
Add a layout for part of a clip
- Open your video and click Layout.
- Drag across the time range you want to change. You can also click or drag across words in the transcript row.
- Choose a preset. Tella creates a layout card for the selected range.
- Drag the card to move it, or drag either edge to adjust when it starts and ends.
The spaces between cards use the clip’s base layout. Click a base-layout gap before choosing a preset when you want to change that default instead of adding another card.
Hold Shift while dragging to select several ranges, then choose one preset to apply it to every eligible range at once.
Add a layout from the playhead
Place the playhead where you want the change and click Add layout. Tella adds a short card using the last non-base layout you chose.
Hold Cmd on Mac or Ctrl on Windows to change the action to Add until end. The new card continues to the next layout card or the end of the clip.
Adjust connected layout cards
When two cards touch, their shared edge is a seam. Drag the seam to move the boundary while the cards stay connected. Hold Option on Mac or Alt on Windows while dragging the seam to pull the cards apart and open a base-layout gap.
To change how a card enters or exits:
- Select the card and open Customize layout.
- Under Animations, set Intro or Outro to Smooth or Hard cut.
The first layout has no editable Intro, and the last layout has no editable Outro.
The seam controls timing; the Animation controls choose the transition style.
Multiple layouts or multiple clips?
- Use multiple layouts when the recording should stay continuous and only its presentation changes.
- Use multiple clips when sections are easier to record separately or should be independently reordered, replaced, or removed.
