Tella’s free webcam test checks your camera and microphone in your browser before a call or recording, showing the live preview, resolution, frame rate, and microphone level. You don’t need a Tella account, and nothing is recorded or uploaded.

Test your camera and microphone

  1. Open the webcam test.
  2. Click Test my camera.
  3. Choose Allow when your browser asks to use your camera and microphone.
  4. Check the live preview, resolution, and frame rate.
  5. Speak normally and confirm that the microphone level meter moves.
  6. If needed, choose a different camera or microphone from the dropdowns.
  7. Click Stop camera when you’re finished.
You can turn Mirror preview off if you want to see the camera’s unmirrored view.

What do the webcam test results mean?

  • Resolution shows the image size your browser is receiving from the camera.
  • Frame rate shows how many frames the browser is displaying each second.
  • Microphone shows a level meter that moves when the selected microphone detects sound.
For most calls and recordings, 1280 × 720 at 30 fps is sufficient. Use 1920 × 1080 at 30 fps when you want a sharper published recording.

Why isn’t my camera or microphone working in the test?

  • Allow camera and microphone access from the permissions icon in your browser’s address bar, then reload the page.
  • Close Zoom, Teams, FaceTime, OBS, or any other app that may be using the camera.
  • Check external camera cables, USB ports, privacy shutters, and hardware mute switches.
  • Open the test in a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari instead of an in-app browser.

The preview and microphone audio stay in your browser tab. The camera turns off when you click Stop camera or close the page.
