Document generation turns a Tella video into written content, such as a summary, documentation, or a list of action items. It lives in the Ask tab on the video’s view page, so you and anyone watching your shared link can use it.

Generate a document from your video

  1. Open the video’s view page.
  2. In the sidebar next to the video, click the Ask tab (the document icon).
  3. Type what you want in the box, for example “Write a step-by-step guide from this video”, or click one of the suggestions below the box to fill it in.
  4. Click the arrow button, or press Cmd + Enter (Mac) or Ctrl + Enter (Windows).
Tella shows Generating… while it writes, then opens the result as a Generated document. Click the stop button to cancel a request that is still running.

Why don’t I see the Ask tab?

The Ask tab only appears when both of these are true:

Copy, download, or save the generated document

From the Generated document window, you can:
  • Copy the text and paste it into another tool.
  • Download it as a Markdown file (document.md).
  • Save to Notion: create a Notion page with your video embedded at the top and the document converted into native Notion blocks. See the Notion integration.
  • Create Linear issue: file the document as a Linear issue with a link to your video. See the Linear integration.
  • Save to Intercom: create a draft Help Center article with your video embedded above the text. See Save generated documents to Intercom.
The Notion, Linear, and Intercom options appear when you are signed in to your Tella workspace.

Can viewers generate documents from my video?

Yes. Anyone who can watch your shared video can use the Ask tab while document generation is on and the video has a transcript, even without signing in to Tella. Turn it off if you don’t want viewers to generate text from the video.

Turn document generation on or off for a video

  1. Open the video in the editor and click Share in the top right, or open More (…) on the video’s view page.
  2. Click Viewer settings.
  3. Switch Document generation on or off.
See Viewer settings for the other options on that page.

Change the default for new videos

New videos have document generation on by default. To change that, click your workspace name, open Settings, then Preferences, and switch Allow document generation off. You can still turn it on for an individual video in its viewer settings. See Preferences.
